Guest post by classics teacher Sarah Miller: This spring the Upper School Classics Club traveled to Easton, MD for the Maryland Junior Classical League State Convention. This was MDJCL’s final event of the year, where high school students from across Maryland came together to compete in academic competitions, socialize, and connect with other students who share an interest in Latin and the ancient world. In Certamen (a quiz bowl style competition where teams compete against each other in Latin grammar, translation, Roman history, myth, and cultural trivia) Gilman’s advanced team of juniors Bryan Huang and Matthew Mu placed second, and the intermediate team of freshmen Justin Bai and Shobhit Shivank placed third.
Students also competed in academic testing of various subjects. Justin Bai placed 1st in Level 2 Grammar, Derivatives, and the Heptathalon; Shobhit Shivank placed first in Level 2 Vocabulary and third in Grammar; Bryan Huang placed first in Level 5 Latin Literature and third in Grammar and Vocabulary; and Matthew Mu placed second in Level 5 Vocabulary.
Finally, Bryan Huang was elected vice president of the Maryland Junior Classical League for the 2017-2018 school year.
